Frankie and Sophie have been best friends since they were little girls. Things change between them after they leave for different universities, but they come home for the summer of 1997, and that’s when everything goes wrong. Sophie meets Leon, and Frankie warns her to stay away from him. When you’re twenty-one and in love, it’s hard to listen to other opinions. Then one night Sophie disappears, with only one shoe found on the old, broken-down pier. Almost twenty years later, a woman’s remains have been found and so Daniel, Sophie’s brother, calls Frankie to come help solve the mystery of what really happened to Sophie, to find out what happened to the Local Girl Missing.

This was a fantastic example of what female friendship can really be like – one always dominates the other, and there tends to be the slightest hint of envy on both sides. Sometimes that envy grows to epic proportions. This novel shows us how far we are willing to go to get what we want and how we convince ourselves it doesn’t matter who we hurt along the way.

The story is told from Frankie’s current point of view as if she is talking to Sophie and alternates with Sophie’s journal entries from that summer. As you read, you as the reader discover that you have to decide which narrator is more reliable, since we tend to be deceptive and tell only the parts of the story we want you to know. I’ve noticed that is a common theme these days among fiction works, which I think is a fantastic idea. It makes you forget that one person actually wrote this story who has control of all the pieces and could just tell it to you straight. It flows more naturally this way, like some people you just met are telling you their stories. I thoroughly enjoy this storytelling method, and if you do too, then you will want to read this book.
